Greer Pleads Guilty-Budman's Smells Rat!
I was hot about this on today's show! Former Florida Republican Party Chairman Jim Greer has struck a last minute deal to avoid going to trial. By pleading guilty to four counts of theft and one charge of money laundering, Greer swaps what could have been up to 35 years in prison for a sentence I predict will land him behind bars for less than 2 years. In addition, with no trial, the GOP avoids what could have been some very damning testimony about fund raising practices among key political figures beginning with former Republican Charlie Crist and including a Who's Who of power players within the party.
One quote from Greer's attorney really troubles me.
"A lot of people didn't want this trial to go forward, and I don't think the trial's going forward".
What that says to me is enormous pressure was put on the prosecution to accept a plea deal, and they caved in. I hate these deals..always have! Why do we have prosecutors (whose salaries we're paying!) if they so often find ways not to take cases to trial and prosecute them to the maximum extent the law allows?
